Using locally -manufact ured Douglas fir plywood on the interior walls adds wa rmth to the indust rial interior

Partially burying the fuel sto rag e and processing areas into the earth reduces the appa rent scale of the building.

The cantilevered “box” clad in west ern red ceda r siding contains the operation and research compon ents of the UNBC BioEnergy Plant.

The plant [upper left in photo ] supplies 71% of the total campus heat demand. It is the first university building in BC, and only the second indust rial building in Canada , to ac hieve LEED Platin um certification.

The central at rium interconn ects all three floo rs, links the building comm unity, creat es a daylit multi -purpos e hub while accommodating the turning radius fo r transporting a 4ft diameter, 24ft long pipe filled with hydrolic fluid between labs.

Expos ed conc rete ceilings contain radiant heating and cooling piping. Suspended ceilings are selectively used

The solar wall at penthouse level is angled fo r maximum efficiency and is capabl e of preheating incoming air to 16°C in on clear winter days

Fronting Longwood Road in Hamilton, Canmet Material Technology Laboratory reclaims brownfield lands and is the anchor tenant at McMaster Innovation Park.

2014 AWARD-WINNING PROJECT: Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability, Vancouver

A living roof on the audito rium provides a co urtyard amenity fo r upper-level office users.

The living screen on the western facad e is planted with deciduous vines, creating a passive shading device that displays seasonal change.

The buiding’a u-shape contributes to the project goal of 100% natural daylight and ventilation for all inhabitants including the auditorium located in the centre of the building.

2014 AWARD-WINNING PROJECT: Vandusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre, Vancouver

A roof petal turns downward to touch the earth, symbolically expressing the connection between building and nature.

The oculus at the centre of the building acts as a ventilation chimney, a skylight, and also as a sundial.

The Green roof which includes a vegetated land ramp to connect the roof to the ground plane.

2014 AWARD-WINNING PROJECT: Mountain Equipment Co-op Store, North Vancouver

The site offered a rare opportunity to blur the edges between the retail facility and the adja ent public park and stream ecosystem

The boardwalk approach. The energy perfo rmance of the building is exemplary given the need to att ract retail custom ers with large expans es of glazing

During daylight hours the retail floor is lit entirely with natural light from the clerestory glazing in the sawtooth roof

The exterior green wall reduces heating demand through evaporative cooling, and is irrigated using storm water from the roof.

With parking located at the rear, the building could be located at the intersection fo the principal streets, improving the pedestrian experience.

The building has a hybrid steel and glulam structure and demountable structural insulated panels for the walls and roof

Kenogami House

The Kenogami House in Saguenay, Quebec is the first home built under Ecohome’s Net Zero Heat program. It holds the highest LEED point score achieved in Canada [106], a Net Zero Heat rating of 14.6 kWh and a Home of the Year Award from Green Builder© Media in the U.S. for Best Resilient Design.
